Zuckerberg Plans US Road Trips for 2017 Personal Challenge
The Facebook CEO aims to visit and meet people in every US state by the end of the year.
Mark Zuckerberg is hitting the road this year to complete his 2017 personal challenge.
The Facebook CEO on Tuesday announced this year's annual task: "to have visited and met people in every state in the US by the end of the year."
"After a tumultuous last year, my hope for this challenge is to get out and talk to more people about how they're living, working and thinking about the future," Zuck wrote in an announcement.
Based in Palo Alto, Calif., the New York native says he has spent "significant time" in many states, but must visit "about 30" more to conquer all 50 territories.
'Recently, I've traveled around the world and visited many cities, and now I'm excited to explore more of our country and meet more people here," Zuckerberg said.
Folks seem quite receptive to the idea: Nearly 230,000 people liked this week's post, which was shared more than 4,350 times and garnered 17,000 comments—many of which include invites to US users' home states.
"If you're ever near Neosho, MO, let's have coffee. My treat!" Aaron Decker wrote.
"Mark, I would be HONORED to meet you when you come to Virginia," Brian Storm said. "Pizza is on me!"
"If you come to Houston I'll treat you and Priscilla to the best hamburger," Adonis O. Alexander offered.
While the billionaire tech titan can certainly afford his own meals, Zuckerberg is especially keen to hobnob with everyday folk—those who use Facebook, those who don't, and those who can't access the social network.
"My work is about connecting the world and giving everyone a voice," he wrote. "I want to personally hear more of those voices this year."
An itinerary has not yet been revealed. But Zuck outlined plans for the upcoming excursions: road trips with wife Priscilla, stops in small towns and at universities, visits to Facebook offices nationwide, meetings with teachers and scientists, and "trips to fun places you recommend along the way."
In an effort to learn new things and have different experiences, Zuckerberg has set himself a different goal each year; recently he ran 365 miles, read 25 books, learned Mandarin, and built an AI for his home.
"I've enjoyed doing these challenges with our community," he said, promising more details soon "about how everyone around the world can join in."
